Punahou Class of 1959

40th Reunion Photos Scrapbook

KAUAI - Tuesday June 8th

Helen, Chuck, Valdeen, Pauahi, Doug, Dorothy and Jean. More early morning Kauai Coffee and conversation.

Valdeen and Steve catch some morning sun by the pool.

On Tuesday morning nine of us played golf at the Jack Nicklaus designed championship Kiele Lagoons golf course. Here is the spectacular 15th hole.

Kiele is one of the top 100 rated courses in the world. The views are spectacular and the course is challenging. Janet Hughes was our leader and led three threesomes in a fun 18 holes of "Scramble". Ask Karl and Jon how tough the course is. They lost 12 golf balls between the two of them (and that was only on the first nine). Janet's threesome won the prize for the best round.

On Tuesday, expedition leader Don Smith led the kayakers up the Hanalei River and then down the river and out into the Hanalei Bay.

The gang tunes in to expert paddling instructions ahead of time from expedition leader Don.

The Hanalei River through the Hanalei Valley, kayaking scene for the day.

Pami launches first. Looking good Pami.

Don heads upstream in the lead, then pauses to enjoy the view of Mt. Waialeale, the wettest place in the world and water source of the Hanalei River, as Steve gives the "shaka way to go babe" sign.

Cheryl and Keith find paddling downstream even more fun.

The gang spreads out on the Hanalei River like a flotilla of brightly colored ducklings. Hey, did anyone notice which direction our leader headed?

Pat says to himself "If I can pilot a 747, I should be able to handle the controls on this kayak". Easier said than done.

Steve and Valdeen "raft up" together.

The gang enters Hanalei Bay at the mouth of the river.

Lynn takes a rest in the middle of the Hanalei Bay looking back at the Hanalei Valley.

Tuesday the ladies enjoyed a nice lunch together at the Princeville Hotel Terrace and Fountain overlooking beautiful Hanalei Bay.

Val, Susan, Dee Dee and Karen enjoying the moment.

Tuesday afternoon the gang took a boat ride up the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto.

Cecil arranged a free trip for the entire gang using his past connections with the local Waialeale family who owns and operates the Wailua river boat service. Live Hawaiian entertainment accompanied us up and back.

The gang boards one of the river boats.

Helen thanks Cecil for arranging the Wailua River trip for us.

  • Katy Cabot Shoemaker and Harry are all ready for the bright Kauai sun in their new hats.

A trail from the river through the tropical rain forest canopy leads to the natural hanging tropical ferns of the Fern Grotto. This very site is one of the most romantic places in the world. Thousands of weddings have been performed here over the years.

Pauahi and Pat enjoying the outing.

Pauahi, Lynn and Pami preparing luau kau kau in the kitchen.

The sunset watching gang assembles for another unbelievably beautiful sunset.

    And here it is!

The onolicious luau Kau Kau is served. Try coconut mahimahi and Chinese Chicken for entrees. And of course, plenty sticky rice. The tables are full of gardenia blossoms to add fragrance to the festivities. In the background, Doug adjusts the volume on his custom CD he assembled containing all of the 40 songs we danced to at our Graduation Dance in June of 1959.

The mother of all beach bon fires Tuesday night at Haena Tunnels Makua Beach.

Cheryl, Keith and Jon gaze into the heavens while Frank and Karl enjoy the warmth of the bonfire. We all sang "oldies but goodies" including Kingston Trio, Harry Belafonte, and even some hauna pilau surfing stuff from our nefarious past including "Took My Gal for a Surfboard Ride...", (all lost in the fifties).
