Punahou Class of 1959
40th Reunion Photos Scrapbook
KAUAI - Wednesday June 9th
Wednesday:
On Wednesday morning, 30 of us visited Allerton National Tropical Botanical Gardens in Lawai.
We rode in an open tram from the visitor center at Spouting Horn down to Allerton Gardens which is framed perfectly between the beautiful Lawai Beach and the cliffs of Lawai Valley. Note the "Night Blooming Cirius a Punahou" blossoms in the front closing up in the morning sun reminding us of the beautiful blossoms around the Punahou campus that delighted us several times each year as children.
A Rainbow Shower tree, one of thousands of flowering tropical trees and plants which greeted us.
Bougainvilla blossoms were the favorites of Queen Liliuokalani who spent summers at her beloved home in the beautiful Lawai Valley.
One of the numerous species of Bird of Paradise along the walkways of Allerton Gardens.

Here are some of the many varieties and species of Orchids, Bromeliads, Bird of Paradise and Ginger among the flowering plant life we encountered at Allerton and in the private green houses and flower markets of Kauai.

Another of many varieties of bromeliads we encountered in the gardens.
Bird of Paradise, orchids, anthiriums and ginger were among the thousands of flowering plants of unimaginable beauty and variety which welcomed us at every turn in the gardens, greenhouses, and forests of Kauai.

Jon leans on a classic 1931 Dodge "Hilo Sampan" Taxicab, an alternate mode of transportation around the gardens when it is not broken down as it was the day we visited.
We walked along cool shaded paths through the tropical forest which opened up into beautiful sculpted gardens, each one with different planted walls and featuring uniquely designed fountains and sculptures.
The gang rests in the cool shade of a gigantic Australian Morton Bay Fig tree. This same tree with its sculpted above ground roots was the famous backdrop for a memorable scene in Jurassic Park.
Na Pali Trail Hike
On Wednesday morning a hardy gang set out on the Na Pali Trail enroute to Hanakapi'ai Beach and Hanakapi'ai Falls.
Steve, Valdeen, Brad, Pat, Judi and Enrique take a photo op breather on the rugged Na Pali trail which goes 11 miles in to Kalalau Valley.
Others of us experienced the Na Pali Coast trail vicariously from the relative safety and comfort of a helicopter.
Enrique and Pat cool off their feet in Hanakapi'ai Stream.
Pat goes for a swim in the cold fresh water that streams over the falls and thunders into the pool below.
Pat takes a final photo op within sight of the spectacular Hanakapi'ai Falls in the background before starting the long hike back.
Snorkeling at Tunnels Makua Beach in Haena
Crowds are not a problem as Dee Dee take this photo of Jon entering the water with his snorkeling equipment.
We snorkeled right off the beach houses in Haena. Jon counted over 50 species of brightly colored reef fishes in the shallow warm water within 50 yards of shore.
Wednesday afternoon the gang enjoyed a live demonstration of the Hawaiian art of coconut and lauhala weaving.
Kawehiwehi and Kapiolani Hoopii from Anahola, Kauai demonstrate weaving a coconut hat and a bowl to an attentive audience below including Pam, Jan, Jon, Pauahi, Helen and Lois.

Pami makes her own bowl while Sally takes copious notes so they can replicate it again back home.
Karen Nakata, her sister Merrilee, Karen, Christina, Margot, Pauahi and Lois practice weaving special coconut and lauhala designs. Lau means "leaf" of the hala tree.

Bare feet, baggy surfing trunks, faded "T" shirt, flower leis, and a hand made coconut hat from "Hoopii's Haberdashery" in Hanalei to protect the head from the strong Island sun.
For 30 million years, these glorious sunsets, each so magnificently unique and unreproducible in their detail, have marked the end of day on Kauai.
Here is just one of those days, Wednesday's glorious sunset from Haena
(center) and Hanalei (left and right).
Wednesday is another open "Dine Around" night. Here Jon and Karen enjoy a late dinner at the PrinceVille Hotel in Hanalei. Karen gets Jon "all to herself" for one evening.
Thursday June 10th

After a wonderful five days together on Kauai, the gang boards the local Aloha return flight eagerly looking forward to four more days of reunion activities awaiting us in Honolulu.
